At the Health Expo 2009 our class interviewed Sue Martin, an Aussie helpers volunteer.
Aussie helpers is a group of volunteers who help collect food, money and help the farmers in the bush, e.g. in Victoria, Queensland, North Australia. The farmers need help because there were floods, drought and bush fires as well. Nobody pays for them to collect the food and take it up to volunteers. Also they do help people with depression.
There are about 30-40 volunteers all together.Volunteers come from all around Australia. They do come and go and put the time that they can.
There a lot farmers in the bush, some who are really poor and have a hard time with floods, bush fires and drought.
They've heard who needs help from the grapevine, because people have a lot of pride and they don't want to ask for help. The volunteers heard from somebody ringing and giving the information about somebody who needs help. SHe also called this way of getting information the bush telegraph, which is almost like a gossip chain.
